New DVD Set for BC Distribution
Targets Smoking During Pregnancy

A-DES' new video on pregnancy and smoking, with a focus on Aboriginal communities, is set to be distributed across British Columbia.

"A Mother's Message ..." takes a candid, unvarnished look at the health problems smoking mothers can inflict upon their newborn infants, and how secondhand smoke – from fathers as well as mothers – can pose risks to all children in a home. The messages are shared by young Aboriginal women and elders, unscripted and in their own words, as well as by medical experts.

The short (15-minute) film, funded by Health Canada, also looks at the positive role of tobacco in First Nations culture and talks about the healthy outcomes of quitting.

"A Mother's Message ..." premiered recently at an Assembly of First Nations conference in Saskatoon and was featured in a Dave Sims news segment on MBC Radio. The project also was highlighted in a feature story in the February issue of Windspeaker, Canada's preeminent national Aboriginal publication.

Groups who would like a copy of "A Mother' Message ..." should contact A-DES at info@ades.bc.ca
