Grad Tips

Graduation is a special time for teens and parents alike. It’s also a time of exceptional vulnerability when kids will feel particularly pressured to party. Parent participation and planning with your teen can make all the difference.

What’s the Plan?
Plan ahead with your kids. How will they be celebrating? With whom? Where? How will they be traveling from party to party?

Dry Roads
If your teens are hiring a limo with friends find out what the company’s policy is in regard to underage drinking. Have a back-up plan. No graduate is going to want Mom or Dad chauffeuring them on grad night but maybe there is a favourite uncle or family friend who could be pressed into service.

Message in a Bottle
Behaviour speaks louder than words. By your own example teach your kids that celebrations and good times do not require alcohol and other drugs.

Connect with other Parents
Talk to other parents and school administration about how to keep your kids safe.

Plan a Party
Suggest an after-grad party at your house and work with your teen to make it a night to remember -  food, games, prizes, dancing.

It’s Your Party
Remember that it is illegal to serve alcohol to anyone under the age of 19. Make it clear you don’t permit underage drinking.
